As the names of the game modes are suggests, the game modes are typical of most First Person Shooters out there. Play alone, on a team, or with special gear and life counts. Most FPS will find at least one game mode they know and love.
Character's movement is fast and creates plenty of opportunity to out-maneuver the enemy. The game heavily favors being able to close the gap or have the skill to hit a quick moving target at a distance. Respawn time is very fast (around 3 seconds) making the game very active and not so punishable by deaths. Matches keep on moving without long interruptions or pauses.
Playing this game on the browser has its ups and downs. according to one of the developers on the Discord server, the game is very sensitive to package loss, so if you have any other applications or tabs also consuming your internet speed be careful since can also affect your performance in-game and can be frustrating.
After trying out the game on Opera GX, Firefox, Brave, Google Chrome, Microsft Edge, and Internet Explorer, the latency seems best on Opera GX and Microsoft Edge. The best performing browsers overall were Opera GX and Google Chrome for a balance of low latency and quality rendering. Firefox provides more stability compared Opera GX and Chrome in terms of FPS and rendering, but has more issues with latency and ping
Controls are very simple, much like any FPS PC shooter. WASD to move and numbers or scroll wheel to switch weapons. There are some "abilities" that can be swapped in for character loadout, such as picking between Smoke Bomb or Flashbang, Quick Teleport, and ground mines. These items have several effects for killing the enemies’ different ways, so get creative!
Starting the game can be confusing as you get used to the layouts of the map and the key positions of each one of them, especially according to the game mode. Staying on a corner like many players do on other FPS may not have much value as players here are utilize their mobility for mid-air and sliding shots as opposed to Battlefield or CSGO where the positioning is key, this would be a great representation of "git gud" at FPS mechanics.
Loading screens can be frustrating occasionally. When opening the website, the game, it will usually start right away on the Free-For-All game mode. either on an already started match or almost ending the match. Occasionally the game does not load and must refresh the website once again which may take a couple of minutes.
If you are a competitive player of FPS, you may have gotten used to listening to footsteps to notice where your enemies are or hearing the gunshots to have a directional positioning of where the fight is taking place. Game sound placement for ev.io is messy. You may hear footsteps very while the enemy is much further away. Gunshots sometimes can be heard but is also not very reliable. Learning to track the gunfire effects and bullet trails are the best tool you can use to see your enemy's positions.
The game offers a variety of way to get around the map that most FPS players will recognize. Use stamina to sprint or slide, crouch to take cover, or double jump to get even more evasive.
A core mechanic of EV.IO is the health regeneration (Except for Battle Royale, Survival, and Last Man Standing). If you lost health, after a few seconds of not getting hit your health starts regenerating meaning you don't have to worry about finding health kits making for very fast paced and exciting gameplay.
EV.IO Graphics
Using simple graphics with solid colors on low brightness, with low rendered graphics to allows the game to run well on the browser and without having to install any other extension. (higher resolution available with better settings).
Similar to the old Quake, recognizing the model shape of characters at a long distance could be problematic, so at far distances, you'll be guiding yourself by the health bar of the players to engage in those fights Up close is easier to recognize other players, especially if they are using an NFT skin that differs from the environment.
The game may not have the best graphics but serves well for the purpose that is providing simple and fun gameplay.
EV.IO Investment
A positive investment from EV.IO is that NFTs are not any game boosters on the gameplay aspect, are just cosmetic skins. No extra health, no extra stamina, extra bullets, no shield. Just skins to for an aesthetic appeal, with the advantage of being an NFT so you actually own the in game asset.
These skins ARE your key to start earning "E" the currency of EV.IO. Earning "E" will allow you to switch it to "SOL" to be sent to your Solana wallet.
"E" can be obtained according to how many kills you get per match. If your match or the game mode has an earning booster, your "E" earnings will also increase. More factors and achievements during a match can increase your earnings, for instance:
· Killing spree
· Placing top 1 in the match
· Headshots
· Longshots
· Grenade Kill.
· More achievements possible.
But we have to be realistic with the earnings of this game.
Here is an example for the minimum investment needed.
EV.IO marketplace is on "Fractal", where you can see what skins are listed for sale. The lowest price for skin goes for 2 SOL - 2.20 SOL for your character.
If you have a decent Kill/Death ratio, let's say doing 10-15 kills per match and playing around 4hrs a day can end up doing 1$-1.5$ a day. The better you are, the more you'll earn.
There are no limits to earning for this game, you can play as much as you want with no time gated play mechanics. ROI from your investment with a common character skin takes around 30 days, so consider how much are you willing to invest and play if you do approach this game as an investment.
Having a skin (NFT) gives you the possibility to not only earn but also get an NFT drop when finishing a match. The higher the tier of rarity from the skin you are using, the more the earnings will be and the more chances for drops. These can potentially increase earnings to recover your investment sooner than expected and end up on profits sooner than expected.
There's a scholarship system supported by the game, by having an NFT you can leave it for "rent" for a certain amount of time and earnings will be split on the percentages designated by the NFT owner.
How profitable a scholar can be will depend on the player who uses the NFT.
EV.IO is worth the investment?
This is very subjective.
There's the time factor and skills factor.
If you don't have the time to play the game, you won't get used to the game's rhythm and won't develop the skills as a player to end up with a score in the matches. There is always the option to rent a skin out if you cannot commit to the time needed to play as many others are doing. The developers are active and finding ways to improve their gameplay and ecosystem. Sadly the Discord structure is vague and not so friendly members. It can be a little bit challenging to obtain the information you'll want for investment and gameplay execution .
